7th Annual Neptune Festival Symphony by the Sea Series Welcomes New Virginia Symphony Conductor

First Concert of the 7th Annual Neptune Festival Symphony by the Sea Series Welcomes New Virginia Symphony Orchestra Conductor
Inaugural Concert of the Season to Featured Music from Blockbuster Movies

June 26, 2018 - Virginia Beach

The Neptune Festival will be partnering with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra to officially introduce the VSO’s new assistant conductor to the Hampton Roads music community when beachfront musical strains again fill the air at the free Symphony by the Sea Concert Series this summer.

The VSO’s newly appointed Assistant Conductor Gonzalo Farias will make his debut performance with the orchestra on Thursday, July 12 at the 31st Street stage at King Neptune’s Park on the Virginia Beach oceanfront. Farias says his ambition is “to establish music-making as a way of rethinking our place in society by cultivating respect, trust, and cooperation among us.”

“The position of assistant conductor of the Virginia Symphony is a critical role,” according to GRAMMY-winning VSO Music Director, JoAnn Falletta. “In Gonzalo we have found both a superb conductor and musician and a charismatic leader, and I am thrilled to have him as a colleague. He is exceptional.”

This Neptune Festival event is the first of six summer oceanfront concerts, four performed by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, with the remaining two performed by Symphonicity. The season inaugural concert with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra will feature popular movie music from Sleeping Beauty, The Incredibles, Up, Harry Potter and the The Goblet of Fire, Fantasia 2000, Beauty and the Beast, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Peter Pan.

Now in its 7th year, the Symphony by the Sea concerts are a free musical offering to residents and visitors. Guests are encouraged to come early, as these concerts are well-attended and typically fill the 31st street park. The Neptune Festival also offers series VIP memberships that include reserved seating and a pre-show reception for each concert. More on VIP memberships can be found at https://www.neptunefestival.com/products/symphony-sea-membership.

For the past two seasons, Mr. Farias has held the prestigious Conducting Fellowship position at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under the mentorship of BSO Music Director, Marin Alsop. He is a former Music Director of the Joliet Symphony Orchestra and most recently was Associate Conductor of the Occasional Symphony in Baltimore. Born in Santiago de Chile, Farias began playing piano at age 5. He has received many accolades for his extensive work and study in South America, Switzerland, and Denmark, as well as in the U.S.
