Virginia Beach, VA: It’s the signature event of the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival and it continues to expand and grow as the Neptune Festival vies to make Virginia Beach the sandsculpting capital of the world! Neptune’s International Sandsculpting Championship returns to the Neptune Festival’s Boardwalk Weekend beginning September 29 and will continue through October 8. The international field of 32 sculptors, 12 solo and 10 double teams represent 11 countries from around the world and all competing for over $57,500 in awards and stipends. According to sculptor John Goody (Italy), “(This) is by far the best event on our national sand competition circuit. From management, to total prize package, to hotel accommodations, to just plain fun, this event is second to none." The competition begins on Tuesday, September 26 but is closed to the public for the sculpting portion. After judging on Thursday afternoon, “Neptune’s Land of Sand,” the gallery of completed sand sculptures, opens under the big tent at 7th Street Friday morning and remains open through Sunday, October 9 The expanded schedule for “Neptune’s Land of Sand” gives residents and visitors alike the opportunity to enjoy these magnificent art creations for ten days. With the highest caliber of sculptors available and expanded viewing time, it all adds up to enhanced opportunities and time for people to enjoy. Most importantly, the ten-day event provides an enhanced fund-raising opportunity for the event’s charity partner, The Governor’s School for the Arts. A huge tent, almost as large as a football field, will house 22 sculptures created by 12 solo and 10 doubles teams! Sculptors will compete for the largest prize purse awarded in the country.
Amateur Sandsculpting - School and Freelance Sculpting Divisions
During Boardwalk Weekend, you can also cheer on your favorite local school or freelance entrant as the amateur division shows its style. Pre-registration is required to participate.
