Like a phoenix rising from the ashes of the pandemic’s fallout, the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival is back! Cancelled for what would have been its 47th season last year, the Neptune Festival’s famed Boardwalk Weekend, which was launched in 1974, will retake its honored position as the East Coast’s Largest Outdoor Party in 2021.
The Neptune Festival hosts hundreds of thousands of people in dozens of events through the year, culminating in a spectacular flagship Boardwalk Weekend celebration at the end of September. From concerts and wine festivals to an 8k race and sailing regatta, the Festival’s exciting events are designed to celebrate beach life, drive tourism to Hampton Roads, and provide a fundraising platform for charity partners. This year’s Annual Virginia Beach Neptune Festival’s Boardwalk Weekend will be celebrated Friday, September 24 – Sunday, September 26.
A perennial fan-favorite, the Neptune Festival’s Symphony by the Sea Concert Series—presented by the Breeden Company launches its 10th season. This free concert series features performances by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Symphonicity, performed Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at Neptune’s Park at 31st Street and Atlantic Avenue. Bring a beach chair and come early, as the park fills up quickly for these popular summer concerts. While all concerts are free, VIP Series Memberships are offered, which include reserved seating and more for $100/person for all six concerts. Next up is the popular Neptune’s 6th Annual Coastal Craft Beer Festival on Saturday, August 21st from 1PM until 6PM at Neptune’s Park. Featuring local Virginia beers, ciders and seltzers, as well as national and regional craft beers, attendees will enjoy over 65 beers from 30 breweries, live music and more! Delicious food and snack accompaniments can be purchased from Ynot Italian.

The End of Summer Bay Bash is a spectacular way to celebrate the close of sizzling summer fun with endless food and beverages, exciting interactive entertainment, live music, and dancing by the water—all in support of Toby’s Dream Foundation. Neptune’s Surfing Classic is a surf showdown for young and old surfers alike. Complete with prizes and bragging rights, this event is produced in conjunction with the Eastern Surfing Association. The Neptune Festival’s event which eclipses all other festival events is the Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend. Beginning on the last Friday of September, Virginia’s largest annual event will span over three days, from Friday, September 24th through Sunday, September 26th, along the Virginia Beach oceanfront boardwalk from 6th through 36th Streets.

With 30 blocks of nonstop action, highlights include the top-five-in-the-nation ranked Art & Craft Show, extending from 20th through 31st Streets and featuring the works of over 250 artists, a Volleyball Tournament, the Atlantic Sailing Regatta, an 8K Race and a Grand Parade featuring a myriad of floats, an appearance by King Neptune himself, marching bands and assorted entertainment.
The signature event of the Boardwalk Weekend is the International Sand Sculpting Championship. Billed as one of the largest sand sculpting competitions in the world, spectators are able watch the transformation of piles of sand into works of art by master sculptors from 11 countries over the course of the three-day build. This competition draws some of the best competitors from around the world. All of this happens in King Neptune’s Land of Sand, a huge tented gallery area extending from 6th to 8th Streets. The sand masterpieces remain on exhibit until October 3rd. Admission is $5 to the Land of Sand. Children 12 and under are admitted free with an accompanying paying adult. The gallery accommodates strollers and wheelchairs, but animals will not be allowed.
